New Journal Titles Added to the Library Collection for 2014

This year, four new online journal titles have been added to the Library collection: Chest; Thrombosis and Haemostasis; Thyroid; and Cellular Microbiology. For more details see a list of the New and Canceled Journal Titles for 2014.

These, and all online journal titles, may be found and accessed from the e-Journal Portal.  For journal titles that are available in print as well as online use the Library catalog NYMCat.

Evaluating the journal collection is a continuous process, and each January, on a calendar year basis, journals are added or canceled.  As part of the “decision equation,” the Library’s Collection Development Policy lists: scope and content, quality, currency, timeliness, uniqueness, use, need in the curriculum, cost, and format.  And, whether or not the title is indexed and where.

Currently, through the Library, the NYMC community has access to 15,788 online unique titles, providing full-text articles. Although this may seem like a particularly large number of titles, the collection has been assembled from numerous sources: single and groups of titles specifically subscribed to, databases holding vast numbers of titles (both NYMC subscribed and provided by the New York State Library), and finally open-access titles from a variety of locations.

The single best way for a journal title to be considered for purchase is to request articles needed via ILLiad, our document delivery system.  Once a trigger point of 5 has been reached, the library staff automatically review the cost and need to purchase. Additionally, titles can be recommended for purchase using the Library’s online Recommendation Form.
