Library Book Club to Read Eric Topol’s The Creative Destruction of Medicine

The library is hosting a book club and has chosen it’s first book, Eric Topol’s “The Creative Destruction of Medicine” (2012: Basic Books). The book club will read current books about medicine, public health, health care, and other topics and hold discussion groups quarterly. The brief description of this first book:

Mobile technology has transformed our lives, and personal genomics is revolutionizing biology. But despite the availability of technologies that can provide wireless, personalized health care at lower cost, the medical community has resisted change. In The Creative Destruction of Medicine, Eric Topol—one of the nation’s top physicians—calls for consumer activism to demand innovation and the democratization of medical care. The Creative Destruction of Medicine is the definitive account of the coming disruption of medicine, written by the field’s leading voice.

Send a message to Marie Ascher and/or Diana Cunningham to “sign up” for the book club — or comment below. We’re interested in getting an idea of who might participate.  We anticipate we will read approximately four relevant and topical books per year and hold a quarterly gathering to discuss each book (and perhaps eat!) We have not set a time for these meetings at this point, but they would likely be held around 4 PM on either Tuesday or Wednesdays either in the new library space in the Skyline Building or in the Health Sciences Library in the BSB. Once we see who might be interested we will make some of those decisions.
