The Health Sciences Library is pleased to announce online access to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Directory, which is linked from the Library’s Databases page. As of this year, the ABMS Directory will no longer be printed, but users should be pleased to learn that the online directory is incredibly easy to search. Should you need to search any prior year’s directory, the library holds print copies back to 1986. (Please note that there have been some variant titles over the years: ABMS Compendium of Certified Medical Specialists 1986-91; American Board of Medical Specialties: Annual Report and Reference Handbook 1991-2005; Official ABMS Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists 1992-2011.)
The ABMS Directory provides access to professional information about more than 800,000 board certified physicians in 50+ specialties and 100+ subspecialties from the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). It provides the ability to search for physicians electronically, based on a combination of criteria, including name, board certified specialty, city or state, etc.
Information is updated quarterly with data from ABMS, as well as by updates received from physicians. The directory is a great reference tool to find specialists in various geographic locations, to confirm whether or not a physician is board certified (and their specialty), and as a research tool. However, it does not meet the standards of Primary Source Verification (PSV) for professional credentialing or accreditation. If you require professional, Primary Source data for credentialing visit Board Certified Docs.
Librarians are available to help you search the ABMS; just contact your library liaison for assistance. For any other questions about this or other library resources, please call the reference desk at 914-594-4210, contact your liaison, or Ask a Librarian.
