*NEW*Adobe Captivate Basics – Thursday November 14, 2:00-3:30     Instructor: P. Stein

Adobe Captivate is a dynamic presentation software package.  With it, you can create self-running presentations, tutorials, and software demonstrations that include animations and voiceover, and interactive elements like quizzes, user input fields, and click buttons.

 

Advanced PowerPoint – Friday November 15, 10:00-11:30     Instructor: M. Cotter

Participants will learn how appropriately use advanced PowerPoint techniques including: animation schemes, insertion of movies & sounds, pointer options, and more.  Additionally, scanning of photos and slides will also be included. Basic knowledge of PowerPoint is recommended.

 

*NEW* Conducting the Systematic Review: An Overview – Tuesday November 12, 1:00 – 2:30     Instructors: M. Ascher & D. Crooke 

 Have you ever considered conducting a systematic review? This overview class will present the process, some standards and tools for conducting a systematic review. This includes framing your question, developing your protocol and methodology including a thorough search strategy, and tools for managing your references and screening data. The role of the librarian in the process emphasized.

 

RefWorks Fundamentals – Wednesday November 20,  11:00-12:30 (webinar)      Instructor:  D. Crooke
RefWorks is a management program that allows one to build a bibliographic database. Searching PubMed – Wednesday November 6,  10:30-12:00 (webinar)     Instructor: S. Manning

This class covers the features and search techniques available for searching NLM’s web-based version of MEDLINE, PubMed. Included are the unique search features, how to perform simple and complex searches, how to use limits to narrow a search, as well as how to save and print a search strategy.  Also discussed is the use of PubMed Linkout which allows users to link from the search results to full-text articles.

The Tech Tuesday series is meant to be a quick and informal introduction to web-based tools which the librarians select to assist with presentations, productivity and organization. The topic this week:

23 andMe and Direct-To-Consumer Genomics

 Personal genomics is the branch of genomics concerned with the sequencing and analysis of the genome of an individual. Services like 23andMe and others allow consumers to mail in a saliva sample and receive information on their genetic ancestral history and health risks — and provide a venue for sharing information with other customers. This session will provide the opportunity to see the 23 andMe consumer interface, discuss the process and some findings from this large scale crowd-sourced project, and talk about issues and implications for the future.

 

Using EndNote Web – Tuesday November 19,  1:00-2:30     Instructor: S. Manning
Available freely on the Web to the entire NYMC community, EndNote is a management program that allows a user to create a bibliographic database. The class covers how to retrieve records from a database (such as MEDLINE), organize and edit records after downloading them to a personal computer, and generate a bibliography.

 

Writing Your CV: Clinic – Thursday November 21, 2:30-4:00    Instructor: D. Cunningham
