The new book, Regenerative Nephrology, edited by Dr. Michael Goligorsky, is the subject of the very first “Faculty Book Corner” video brought to you by the Health Sciences Library. On January 18 Dr. Goligorsky, Alvin I. Goodman Chair in Nephrology, Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology and Physiology, Academic Chief of Renal Division, and Director of Renal Research Institute, sat down with Marie Ascher from the Health Sciences Library to discuss the book and the “landscape upon which this book has appeared.”
According to Dr. Goligorsky the concept of regeneration has been overshadowed in recent decades by successes and discoveries related to the mechanisms and processes of disease. The possibilities brought about by stem cell research have “provided thrust to regenerative medicine and regenerative nephrology.” Using examples from mythology, Dr. Goligorsky describes regeneration as a return to old ways of thinking converging with stem cell medicine.
Dr. Goligorsky is especially proud of uniting a team of “marvelous internationally renowned researchers” to write the chapters of this book, which covers everything from evolution to emerging clinical aspects and ethical and practical issues related to regenerative medicine and nephrology.
