Beginning today the Health Sciences Library (HSL) offers online access to the popular Journal Citation Reports (JCR). JCR from Thomson Reuters (previously from ISI) is the yearly publication which provides “impact factors” and other performance metrics for journals. You can access the JCR from the HSL’s Databases page via http://library.nymc.edu.
A journal’s impact factor is defined as “the average number of times recent articles in a specific journal were cited in the JCR coverage year.” See also: http://thomsonreuters.com/products_services/science/free/essays/impact_factor/
All New York Medical College users now have access to both the Science edition (covering over 7,300 journals in science and technology) and the Social Science edition (covering over 2,200 journals in the social sciences) of JCR. The latest edition covers citation data for the year 2009. Journals can be browsed individually by title or by subject category and can be sorted on any of the measures listed. If you would like assistance navigating the product or learning about the different journal performance measures included, please talk to a librarian at 914-594-4210 or via Ask A Librarian. This product will also be covered in our regularly scheduled “Citation Searching” class.
A barcode login is required to access JCR.
