Peer review is foundational to the integrity and rigor of scholarly communication, and sharing your involvement will help to make the peer review process more trusted and transparent. ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is the most widely used system for integrating research activities and showcasing peer review. Your ORCID iD is a persistent digital author identifier that is often required by journals, funders, and institutions for researcher verification.
For those who are new to using a researcher identifier, ORCID will be holding a virtual training session on August 27th at 1:00 pm EST to help you get started.
ORCID is mainly known for distinguishing manuscript authorship, but it’s also a useful tool for verifying and highlighting other scholarly contributions such as podcasts and videos, blogs, news features, social media engagement, and peer review service. The digital identifier verifies your service across platforms, thereby enhancing the discoverability of your work and linking your contributions so that they are recognizable as yours.
If you have registered and utilize your ORCID iD, peer review service is verified in your ORCID profile via integrations with the journal’s manuscript system. You can also add peer review work to your ORCID profile via your Publons account if you have one:
-
Register for an ORCID iD if you haven’t already.
-
Connect your ORCID account to peer review platforms like Publons or directly within journal systems that support ORCID integration.
-
Opt in to have your reviews added to your ORCID record when prompted by participating journals.
-
Adjust visibility settings to control whether reviews are listed publicly (e.g., journal name only, or including date and title, depending on confidentiality).
Individual recognition incentivizes quality peer review, and recognizing peer review as a measurable, reportable activity is not only fair to the researchers who invest countless hours to this activity, it will also be increasingly important for research integrity as we enter this new technological era in scholarly communication.
NYMC librarians are available to assist you with setting up your ORCID account, importing your works efficiently, and/or linking your accounts across platforms. Contact the Scholarly Communication Librarian if you need assistance.
