Social and Digital Media as Scholarly Communication

Librarians involved in our Annual Faculty Bibliography have long discussed whether social or digital media posts merit inclusion in the publication. Authors of a recent article in Academic Medicine have produced a worksheet that helps determine whether social and digital media contributions should be valued as publication equivalent scholarly products (PESPs) in an institutional promotion package.

The article, A Worksheet to Quantify Social and Digital Media Content as Scholarly Products for Academic Promotion. Fitzgerald, J. J., Losee, J. E., Roth, R. N., Pettigrew, C., Thamman, R. (2024). Academic Medicine. 99(4):404-407.  doi:10.1097/ACM.0000000000005628, presents a worksheet that “helps to clearly document for the faculty promotions and appointments committee that the faculty member is contributing to patient education, advocacy, epidemiology, research, health care professions education, or DEI via their social and digital media presence.”
